A group of seventh grade girls meet with their teachers to express their grievances with their school’s dress code and how it is disproportionately applied to some of their Black classmates because of their curvier body types. Together, they set in motion a huge protest where the girls and all the female teachers show up to school wearing the controversial short shorts (called “bootyshorts”), which have been the subject of the administration’s scrutiny. After publicly reprimanding and suspending the leaders of the protest, the principal explains that the “insurrection” was the last straw, and that uniforms will be officially mandated starting next year. Though the protest took a turn for the worse, the girls are proud of themselves for making one of their first political stands.
